If you invite an American business associate to dinner and their reply is “Can I take a raincheck on that?” would you understand?
Can I take a raincheck on that is an American idiom which originally comes from the world of baseball. If a game has to be cancelled because of rain, you pick up a so-called rain-check which enables you to come to another game on another day. So, when used in the world of business, it is a polite way of saying that you can´t make it but maybe another time.
Can I take a raincheck on that = Darf ich auf das ein anders Mal zurückkommen?
